Choosing a Right College or Universities

One of the challenges a student face is deciding which education to pursue and which college / university to go for. This is a very critical stage on which your career is based. Therefore, at this point you have to be very careful because you do not want to waste your time, effort and money. Here are some helpful tips, which help you in choosing right college or university.

First of all, choose a field in which you have interest, then find out which universities are offering relevant programs. You can discuss with your parents and mentor or career counselor on the basis of that you will be able to proceed with the decision making process.

Option 1: Seek out Recommendation

First option is that you choose university based on the recommendation by your parents, mentor, career counselors, teachers or friends. It one of the quickest method which you can go for. Try to get firsthand experience from your friends, social media and family members, as word of mouth will tell you in depth information, which you cannot find anywhere. Do not reply on the brochure, pamphlet or prospectus.
However if you are not satisfied you can do your research which would definitely require time and effort.

Option 2: Decision Making Process

1.      This method will require you to do a survey and invest your time and effort in it. You will have to do research; you can start by visiting university websites, visiting university personally and talk to university alumni and students for more in depth insight about faculty, facility, education, university culture, life and any possible issue that student might face. Furthermore, recruiters may also help you a lot in order to find out the reputation of the university in the industry.
2.      Make a list and write down the potential college or universities, which are offering the desired program.
3.      List down criteria on which you will evaluate each university
a.     Quality of education being provided
b.     Popularity
c.     Cost, scholarships, and financial aid
d.     Geographical location
e.     Size / number of students
f.        Curriculum and Schedules

1.       Some other options may include depending on your concerns, extracurricular activities, career goals, foreign affiliation, rankings, hostel and transportation facilities.

These are typically the basic criteria however, you might have more criteria, and you need to list them down priority wise. For instance, cost is your major concern then location, facility and so on.

1.      After you have done a thorough research about your short listed universities and then write down horizontally in a table. Then write the criteria vertically in the table. An example is given below, you can create such table on a piece of paper of excel sheet:

Name of University
Quality of education being provided
Popularity

Cost, scholarships, and financial aid
Geogra-phical location

Size / number of students

Curriculum and Schedules

1.      Rate each university based on the criteria from 1 to 10. You can specify a scale for example, 1 means not favorable, 5 means average and 10 means highly favorable. For instance, the location is ideal rate it above 7, if the fee is very high you may rate it low and so on. After that, take average of each row. As you can see in the last column, you will get average score of each university. This is a quantitative way of narrowing down your options.

1.      You can list as many universities as you want there is no limit. Then you can sort the universities from high score to low score.
2.      After shortlisting, discuss it with your parents, teachers or counselors in order to finalize your decision.

1.      This method is an excellent method, as it will give you alternatives to choose from, list the best 3 or 5 options and then apply in those universities. Just in case you could not get enrolled in the best university you picked for whatever reasons, you will always have other options to go for.
